My presentation describes several approaches to documenting people in Appalachia and how one photographer works in a community that has been ever inundated with media people- a population that is tired of being photographed and often prefers to be left alone.
I show how I collaborated with the photographer Shelby-Lee Adams on my initial film THE PICTUREMAN. In a later experiment, ANOTHER STRANGER WITH A FILM CAMERA, I re-consider the documentary material and dissect one of Shelby's photo sequences, pairing it up with a variety of narratives- breaking open a whole range of interpretations. This reveals both the strategies of the photographer and the options of the filmmaker working with the same subjects on location.
The presentation is an example of how documentation of photography can function in a post-journalism media world. My presentation invites a discussion with the audience as the material is raw and unfiltered. I have used the film in various teaching environments at UC San Diego and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
