Thingsttten in Deutschland

David Mirer

Saturday, October 25 - 1:50PM to 2:35PM
Clark Theater

Under the conference theme, Ubiquity vs. the Sublime I wish to submit a proposal to one of the formats either to Image maker or Lecture for this years SPE Northeast Regional Conference. The project I wish to give this proposal for is a photographic research project titled "Thingsttten in Deutschland".

For the last year Katharina Bosse and I have been creating images of "Thingsttten" locations. Thingsttten (Thing cult) is a term used to define open-air Nazi cult theaters built between 1933-1945 for the specific intention to entertain local communities. The productions performed where to project propaganda of an idealistic Germanic history and used as a recruitment tool for the National Socialist Party.

Architecture and impressive scenic places were chosen as thingsteads: locations where based on Germanic idyllic surroundings in wooded areas, near bodies of waters, nestled in hills or natural rock formation as well traces of ruins or of local Germanic tribal history.
