Photography can be used as a tool to dig into places in order to reveal their secrets. The photographer does not always know what will be found, and the process –the act of undergoing the investigation – can be revelatory. This research can be performed in many ways but when the photographer’s own stakes are laid out, then the audience benefits from the discoveries materialized in the work: places are revealed to be contested; layers are revealed and tensions are energized by uncertainty.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
