Transformed landscapes highlight tensions between pastoral and industrial ideals, and between natural and social effects. The intersection of beautiful views and contemporary ruins and “follies” powerfully position the viewer in relation to both the present geography and to a shared imagined history. When contemporary landscape photographers borrow from and claim the picturing tradition of landscapes in painting and photography, what is at stake and what new meanings are created? How do landscape photographers direct their audiences’ readings and expectations through the specific strategies that define their work?
