The Art of Wet Scanning: A Complete Film-to-Digital Workshop

Vahid Valikhani

Saturday, March 21 - 9:00AM to 10:30AM
Atlanta 2

This hands-on workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to wet scanning, a high-fidelity method of film digitization prized by photographers and archivists for its ability to capture the finest detail and dynamic range from negatives and slides. Participants will gain a solid foundation in film types—including 35mm, medium format (120), and large format (4x5, 8x10)—while exploring key characteristics such as grain structure, contrast, and color reproduction.

We'll begin with an overview of various scanning tools, comparing flatbed scanners with drum scanners to understand their strengths and limitations. The core of the session focuses on the wet scanning process, which minimizes dust and scratches while enhancing clarity and tonal depth. Attendees will be guided step-by-step through film preparation, fluid application, scanning setup, and post-processing techniques using Adobe Photoshop.

Additionally, alternative methods such as DSLR/mirrorless camera scanning will be discussed, offering accessible and creative options for photographers working with film on a budget or in the field.

By the end of the workshop, participants will walk away with practical knowledge of how to digitize film at a professional level, enabling them to preserve, archive, and showcase their analog work with stunning digital results. Whether you're a fine art photographer, a film enthusiast, or a digital archivist, this session will equip you with the tools and techniques to bridge the gap between analog beauty and digital precision.
