This session explores the transformative potential of collaborations between artists and scientists, positing that such partnerships are not only mutually enriching but essential for addressing complex contemporary issues in novel ways. This kind of collaboration can take many forms; artists using scientific methods in their research and processes, artists looking to scientists for input and inspiration, or artists and scientists directly collaborating on an artwork or project. We hope to present a panel of artists discussing their work and experiences in this realm.
The session will highlight how these collaborations spark new ways of thinking, communicate complex ideas in accessible ways, and inspire both emotional and intellectual engagement with pressing issues—from climate change to biotechnology to psychology. These discussions can serve as case studies, as a way of describing a roadmap for more such partnerships. The poetics of photography can become a catalyst for exchange with scientific ideas and methods.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
