This session examines collaborative photography as a method of ethical co-authorship, where image-making becomes a reciprocal process rooted in community engagement, shared representation, and belonging. Grounded in ongoing projects developed through Northern Illinois University's community partnerships and its Carnegie Foundation designation for Community Engagement, the panel explores how photography can move beyond the frame of individual authorship to serve as a medium of collective voice and social connection.
Together, these projects demonstrate how photography can serve as a process of mutual discovery—where relationships are built through time, care, and shared authorship. By reframing reciprocity not as a technical failure but as a conceptual foundation, this session foregrounds photography's capacity to build trust, foster ethical representation, and cultivate a sense of belonging.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
