Social Practice in an academic setting gets students out into the community. Student preparedness and awareness are essential to its success. This is true within and out of an institutional setting where meetings, readings, and interaction with community representatives contextualize the experience and integrate into the program.
Working within an academic system poses its own challenges. Connection to an institute of higher learning can open doors and lead to funding opportunities. At the same time, there's a larger entity and there needs to be consideration of the institution, curriculum, department, and budgetary pressures.
Taking these two main subjects as a starting point, I propose a panel of educators to discuss how they generated community engaged curricula and their experiences working with the institution to make it happen. By sharing experience, the panel will aim to generate some guideposts for educators interested in developing social practice at their schools.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
