This presentation offers a comprehensive, step-by-step breakdown of the artist residency process, designed to support artists at any stage in their career, whether applying for the first time or seeking their next opportunity. From initial research to packing/travel, every stage of the residency journey is covered.
Topics will include the application process: how to write a compelling proposal, staying organized, presenting work effectively, and tailoring materials to resonate with jurors. Tips on where to find fee waivers, grants, and other financial resources are also shared to help offset residency costs.
The session will also address what to expect during a residency, how to prepare both logistically and mentally, and how to make the most of time on-site. Guidance will be offered on how to stay grounded in new environments, collaborate with others, and make the most of the experience. Strategies for handling rejection with resilience and using it as a learning opportunity will also be discussed.
Framed as a moment of exchange, this presentation invites conversation and shared insight, recognizing that navigating residencies is often shaped by community knowledge and collective experience. Whether applying for a first residency or looking for the next career step, participants will leave with practical tools, useful resources, and new perspectives on the residency landscape.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
