Fariba Hajamadi
Saturday, November 08 - 4:00PM to 5:00PM
Currently on view at UCR ARTS, Fariba Hajamadi: History is in the Caption examines how sites of cultural display shape and reinforce systems of power. Through meticulously constructed photographic compositions, Hajamadi reimagines traditional museum narratives, transforming familiar spaces into layered reflections on history, authorship, and representation.
Her work merges the real and the imagined--a blood-red pool distorts a centuries-old tapestry, while a mirrored view reminiscent of a photographic negative appears through the doorways of the Hagia Sophia. The exhibition also features a custom wallpaper inspired by Toile de Jouy, reinterpreted as a storytelling surface that entwines Iranian history with mythological motifs.
A new sculptural piece, Crows, Cranes, and the Sleeping, expands Hajamadi's exploration of cultural memory and the aesthetics of empire. Together, these works invite viewers to consider how museums mediate narratives of identity, legacy, and belonging.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
