Las Fotos Project empowers teenage girls and gender-expansive youth from communities of color to use photography as a means of self-expression, storytelling, and social change. Founded in 2010 by Los Angeles-based photographer Eric V. Ibarra, the organization provides creative pathways for those who have been systemically and socially silenced, helping them amplify their voices and advocate for their communities.
Through mentorship and hands-on learning, participants explore photography's potential to inspire introspection, evoke meaning, and catalyze change. Now a project of Community Partners, Las Fotos Project serves youth across Central, South, and East Los Angeles, while partnering with schools and nonprofits nationally and internationally to expand its mission.
Presented by Nalani Hernandez Melo, this session will highlight Las Fotos Project's model for creative empowerment, its commitment to equity in the arts, and the transformative impact of youth-led storytelling within contemporary photographic education.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
