This talk critically explores 19th-century ethnographic photography in British India, delving into the New York Public Library's archival practices. Focussing on the complex interplay between colonial exploitation, commodification, and the digital era's ethical quandaries surrounding traumatic images, I would dissect the legacy of the 'The People of India' book, exposing its role in perpetuating colonial ideologies and talk about how my browser-based video disrupts this narrative, challenging the very foundation of digital archives. Together, we'll confront the act of viewing dehumanizing images, raising questions about representation, resistance, and the fight against institutional archives.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
