Joe "Paper Nerd" Domeier
Saturday, March 18 - 3:00PM to 3:45PM
Grandballroom I
Nearly all artists use paper but often do not know much about it, why it works or doesn't work with different media. Attendees will learn why quality paper matters, all about sizing, weight, deckles, the features, benefits, and differences between the many types of paper fibers, including sustainable fibers. Attendees will learn about the environmental impact of making paper, how fine art paper is made, and the history of making paper, including a 438-year-old mill. This is NOT a brand specific workshop. We will cover the pluses and minuses of all popular watercolor paper brands. Videos and images of paper machines in operation. It goes without saying that the products and manufacturing methods have changed since 1584. Only the highest qualities of fibers pass our rigorous testing before use in Hahnemühle papers. The presenter will provide many tactile examples of different felts and paper textures. All attendee's receiver free knowledge and paper samples!
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
