Years Like Water is a decade-long project documenting life in a Russian village. I followed families, as they fell in and out of abject poverty, small entrepreneurial efforts sprouting atop rotting soviet infrastructure, children growing up and becoming parents themselves, elders struggling to get a grasp on current reality. I feel a deep connection to these villagers: I share their memories of a childhood spent on this land. As Russia is once again becoming opaque to our Western understanding, this project is a document of a finished era. The book is about a home to which I may never return.
