Photography was widely used in South Asia and other parts of the world from its earliest days. Where colonization occurred, photography documented it. And yet, for generations, survey courses on the history of photography almost exclusively, until recently, have taught students about European and American photography. From January 2020 meetings in Delhi, in collaboration with the MurthyNAYAK Foundation, SPE expanded connections internationally with photographers and scholars from India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Sharing the dynamic work coming from South Asia, the invited panelists represent the broadest range of creative practice and scholarly endeavor.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
