An observer once called New Orleans "a world in miniature" and filmmaker Stephen Ives says it's "a laboratory for the American experiment." By the middle of the 19th century, French-speaking Catholics and English speaking Protestants, slaves and free people of color, Africans and people of mixed race, Albanians, Swedes, Germans and Irish all called New Orleans home. Out of that jumble, New Orleans grew to be the only city in America that can boast its own architecture, its own music, its own set of cultures and subcultures and its own cuisine. In the 20th century, New Orleans struggled to keep its identity while its mix of cultures morphed, fought and sought equal treatment. And yet, it's a city that has proven its resilience time and time again, particularly after the devastating effects of 2005's Hurricane Katrina.
