Leslie K. Brown: "A Field Guide to the Kodak Picture Spot"

Friday, March 08 - 2:00PM to 2:45PM
Exhibits Hall Room

This initial investigation considers the history, meaning, and legacy of Kodak Picture Spots, ranging from their earliest instances as roadside signs, installations in Disney parks, to contemporary and artistic responses. Recommended views extend back to the Picturesque era and these celebrated signs are just one of several "devices" that teach us how to see and act within the landscape. A field guide of sorts, this study locates and categorizes various iterations and functions of photo spots-including the promotion of potential pictures, specific locations, or captured experiences-and examines the long shadows cast by dictated photographic behaviors and touristic experiences.
