Griffin Memorial is a collaborative project with Prof. Todd Stewart and his students documenting the past and present conditions of Griffin Memorial Hospital, a declining state-run psychiatric institution. Contemporary photography of historic sites at both the collaborative and instructional level demands a unique set of negotiations and considerations. I'm interested in exploring how documenting Griffin Memorial represents both the confluence of an individual's own sensitivity to charged physical sites with larger cultural memories, and the legitimate concerns of hospital administrators with the didactic needs of simply trying to teach university students technical skills and beginning documentary practices.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
