As opposed to more orthodox historical narratives, one may construct an alternate trajectory of recent photographic practice that is motored less by biography, technical developments, art movements, or economics and politics, than by an inexorable shift of concern among image makers and audiences, from the aesthetic to the anti-aesthetic-from beauty to the sublime. Many contemporary photographers instigate the sublime's queasy rapture in the contemplation of traditionally unlikely subjects. Their foci constitute a taxonomy of generic sub-types that locate sublimity not in an encounter with an overwhelmingly impressive nature, but rather in mass culture, technology, and the mundane.
