"Art as Side Effect"

Saturday, March 12 - 2:00PM to 2:45PM
Capitol South

We all find inspiration in the questions that puzzle us. Why would a pro-life man approve of stem cell research if it could provide a cure for his baldness? Why would you choose to take a sleep medication with side effects that include waking up without knowing you were awake, and doing things you didn't know you were doing? What motivates our scientific institutions to collect and arrange the natural world into a vast repository of objects and artifacts, yet exclude samples from western civilizations? How is social media a lot like medical simulation? These are a few of the questions that have inspired my artwork. I'll touch briefly on my early work using scientific and medical imaging technologies, then concentrate on why I invented HAVIDOL, what the American Museum of Natural History is hiding from us, and how medical mannequins might be running our health care system soon.
