What does voting mean? What does it look like? Detailed in the United States Constitution, it is at the foundation of our American political system. In his ongoing series Vote, Mergen questions the ideas and ideals of America as they are manifest in this essential political process where democracy is carried out by the average citizen. The photographs explore the mundane realities of American democracy in the unique environment of the polling place, the confluence of popular culture and our political process, and the incongruity that exists between the functionality of the spaces and the functionality of the voting booth.
