Nine Leaves is a series of nine color photographs of leaves from the same oak tree. Each leaf was hand-typed with DNA which codes for an enzyme involved in the Calvin Cycle (the principle mechanism that makes photosynthesis possible). The work invites the viewer to consider the individuality of each leaf despite sharing the same genome. The intent is to question the cultural assumption that genes are an accurate and somehow absolute representation of an organism, be it tree or human.
