Panel Discussion: Other Archives
Presented by SPE's Multicultural Caucus
Moderator: Roula Seikaly
Panelists: Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Rodney Ewing, Kija Lucas
Who creates archives? Who shapes archival narratives? Who undermines accepted cultural and socio-political narratives by creating their own archives?
Beginning in the 1980s, critique of the origin, construction, and use of photographic archives exposed the medium as a tool of state surveillance and control that is often deployed against vulnerable populations. In the three decades that followed, those lines of inquiry expanded as artists cultivated archival practices as the basis substantive work. For this panel, artists Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Rodney Ewing, Kija Lucas, and moderator Roula Seikaly will discuss the ways each artist has created and used archives to interrogate and dismantle existing narratives. Though based in personal experience, their projects implicate historical, medical, and public archives as institutional contexts that shape our lives.
