Image Maker Presentation by Paul Shambroom
Friday, October 17 - 3:15PM to 4:15PM
Conrad A. Elvehjem Building, Room 160
Paul Shambroom will present work from two new projects, and will discuss his transition from conceptual documentary work to new genres incorporating found images and live theater. "Lost" is a re-contextualizing of photographs from posters that owners place on phone poles and other public locations in hopes of recovering missing pets. The photographs have been degraded by moisture and other environmental factors, resulting in partial loss of the image that mirrors the ambiguous loss of a beloved family member.
His current work-in-process "Pako" is based on an uncut roll of 583 snapshots by unknown amateur photographers, printed by a commercial lab in the late 1970's. Through the use of facial recognition software and relational database software, Shambroom has attempted to identify family and social connections between pictured individuals. These will form the basis of stories which he and his collaborators will develop into a live theater experience. It will explore truth, fiction, and family history through a roll of anonymous images functioning as a 1970's photo time-capsule, complete with bad hair and period costumes!
