Archiving Ecological Calamity and Superfund Sites in Wisconsin

Image Maker Presentation by C. Matthew Luther

Friday, October 17 - 9:00AM to 10:00AM
Conrad A. Elvehjem Building, Room 150

Archiving Ecological Calamity and E.P.A. Superfund Sites in Wisconsin (presentation) will focus on my current photography and research for the Superfund Wisconsin Project along with the project's connection to the history of land use, landscape photography, and how as a culture we define the landscape through image making. The landscape of ecology places itself in the lens of photography as culture increasingly structures a vision of nature through emergent images that influence our daily interactions physically, theoretically and psychologically.

My perspective is not just as an artist or photographer, but also as an individual living with Crohn's Disease a condition in which the body attacks itself creating a splitter effect of disorder throughout the body. There is no know reason why someone develops and is affected by Crohn's Disease, but speculations point to environmental factors. A vague suggestion that something in the soil, air, or water may be suspect. Recent research points to PCB toxins as a possible link to the gestation of the disease, similar to the PCB pollution found at many of the Superfund Sites I document.rn
