My Image-maker Lecture will be focusing on my photographic project Seen/Unseen: The Migrant Children, which centers on observing and documenting migrant workers and their children in Beijing - a highly marginalized and underrepresented community from less developed areas around China that temporarily comes to urban centers for better employment and education opportunities.
This project is a participatory visual investigation that takes on a unique vantage point, transferring the discourse power and subverting the traditional subject-object relationship in photography, showing the seen and the unseen in the lives of the migrant children in Beijing. The displacement and alienation of the migrant people community result in their complicated social and living conditions and states of mind that bring them both dilemma and contentment. My presentation will discuss with the audience those aftermaths in different layers reflecting the complexity of China's current rapid urbanization.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
