Due to the increasing anti-LGBTQ and trans sentiment in the United States, teaching while trans presents unique challenges, especially in deeply religious and politically conservative states like Indiana. In 2023, more than 500 anti-trans laws were proposed across the country, with dozens passing primarily in red states. These laws aim to ostracize and limit life-saving care for millions of trans and non-binary individuals across the nation. This ongoing assault on my basic human rights has inspired my current artistic practice. Using data-bending techniques to disrupt the binary structure of the files themselves, I distort these hate-filled documents into nearly illegible forms. By combining these distortions with imagery of my transitioning body, I aim to illustrate the harm and struggle that this type of hate can cause.
