milk and tears

Saturday, October 21 - 11:00AM to 12:00PM

milk and tears presents material explorations in the historic salted paper printing process towards the creation of a contemporary dialogue around care. The series is a collection of salt prints, made with breastmilk, that process the experience of new motherhood and interject a uniquely feminist narrative into this historical process, and the history of photography. While salt prints naturally display a wide range of color and tonal discrepancies, their variations in this work remind us that our bodies are not machines, but imperfect organisms. This presentation further elaborates on how we can reject the perfectionist tendencies so often engrained in the photographic medium, finding paths through process to encourage acceptance and celebrate diversity. While our modern society overlooks care as something frivolous and sequestered, here care is seen as a necessary building block, the key to meaningful connection to each other and our environment.
