Exhibitions as Creative Practice

Kristin Taylor

Saturday, October 21 - 10:00AM to 11:00AM
RM 913

This presentation will address the creative process behind curating, from my perspective in working with the collections at the Museum of Contemporary Photography. I will build on a recent talk I gave about the 19th and 20th century painter-turned photographer-turned curator, Edward Steichen, who stated: "Once you really commence to see things, then you really commence to feel things." I argue that Steichen's work as the Director of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art, where he created the legendary 1955 exhibition Family of Man, was an extension of his own work as an artist. Looking at other artist-turned-curator examples, I will address the nuanced relationships between the two fields and how they can inform one another. Additionally, in digging into the parallels between the curatorial process and other methods that involve putting many pieces together to form new narratives, I will share how my work in exhibitions is informed by collaging, quilting, and even playlist-making.
