This collection grows by an average of over 1,000 art works each year and focuses on artists who have lived or worked in the area between the Mississippi River and the western intermountain basins. Prior to his position at Texas Tech, he was the chief curator at the University of Arizona Museum of Art, director at the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, and curator at the University of New Mexico Art Museum. Recently, Briggs collaborated with photographer Rick Dingus on a book, Shifting Views and Changing Places (University of Oklahoma Press), and a parallel retrospective exhibition of his work. Briggs has curated over 200 exhibitions and published over 75 books, exhibition catalogs and articles.
