The Evocative OTHER / The Provocative THIS positions these and diverse other examples to consider issues of efficacy and reception through the appropriation of images. By opening up questions of, how empowered a photographic image can be in the postmodern context of doubtful authority; it explores the photographic authority still often embedded in and supported by non-photographic arts. The talk will explore potential undercurrents linked to appropriation such as the ownership of the body – that still enable the appropriated aura of past work to concern, to anger, and to activate. Concurrently, it raises its own queries of efficacy and of ethics.
