Architecture and the Human Psyche

Thomas Kirkbride, a psychiatrist, designed the Kirkbride State Hospital plan in 1848, and thought the symmetry, open sunlight, and air ventilation of the floorplans aided in healing the mentally ill.  My photographic, video, fibers and installation works revolve around these floorplans as well as the stigma behind mental disorders. I aim to raise awareness about these stigmas and further educate the public about mental health.  The urgency for these works is due to the 30% rise in the rate of suicide in the United States since the turn of the century.
