Marcella Hackbardt is a curator, writer, visual artist, and professor of art and photography at Kenyon College in Ohio. She received her MFA from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. She has lectured on the history of photography at conferences such as the International Conference on the Arts in Society, the College Art Association, and at the Wits Art Museum and University of Johannesburg in South Africa. Her essay Unexpected Architectures on photographer Jeff Brouws is included in Jeff Brouws: Silent Monoliths, MIT Press, to be published in 2026. Her curatorial projects include ReWritten: Photographers Reshaping the Narrative at Wright State University in Dayton, and Material Message: Photographs of Fabric at the Weston Gallery in Cincinnati. Her photographic and interdisciplinary artwork has been included in exhibitions at Cleveland's Museum of Contemporary Art, Houston Center for Photography, and Gagosian Gallery in New York, Tokyo, and Paris.
