"At the Threshold" explores the layered emotional experience of a mother witnessing her only child grow up and prepare to leave home. Photographing my son, Xuan, began as an instinct, though he has never liked being in front of the camera. He allows it only because I am his mother, and this reluctant acceptance becomes a metaphor for both the deep bond we share and his transformation into a young adult. The fragments of domestic life I capture reflect my intertwined hopes and fears for his future and mine. Developed over the past three years (2022–2025), this body of work culminates in my MFA thesis exhibition at Bowling Green State University in the Spring of 2025.
