Coming Into Focus - Brian Garbrecht
Brian Garbrecht was told at a young age that he was adopted. Since then, he has searched for his birth family so he could find out who he is, where he comes from, and what happened to the birth mother who gave him up for adoption. With changes to Illinois adoption laws, and the prevalence of online DNA testing, Brian has found many of the answers he has searched for. In 2019, he began work on Coming Into Focus, a project where he has begun to tell this story through photographs, as well as scanned documents and family photos.
El Conocimiento es el Enemigo: The Role of the Bible in Domestic Violence - Lily Guillen
The work in this presentation explores the ways in which the Bible was used to justify abuse or machismo, male chauvinism, in my family. My experience is that of a Mexican-born woman who grew up in an abusive household. As a Catholic, there are many expectations for me, as a woman, that I have been rejecting over the past few years after breaking away from my home; being on the outside makes knowledge the enemy. With elements of painting, sculpture, photography, and embroidery I work through the healing process of unlearning what I believed to be true.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
