New Poetics in Education

A community conversation around technique, ideas, and an ethic of care in the classroom with Amelia Smith and June T Sanders

Friday, October 04 - 10:00AM to 11:30AM

This workshop will focus around a facilitated conversation on engaged pedagogy, teaching techniques, ideas, formulations, and an ethic of care in the classroom. Rather than a traditional panel or workshop structure, this space will utilize shared resources and strategies and engage in lateral learning and a model of peer mentorship. Participants should come with questions and/or insights surrounding classroom cultural and broader questions about how we learn, grow, and cultivate community & care inside of and around educational institutions. The model of New Poetics explores how theories of structure, form, and discourse in poetics can be worked into the language and strategies we use for teaching and crafting these learning communities.

This workshop echoes and elaborates on the work of teaching scholars including Bell Hooks, John Holt, Parker Palmer, Felix Gonzales Torres, and Felicia Rose Chavez. It will also touch on specific strategies for art & photography education and classrooms.
