Kalman's presentation centers around her self-published book, Index 2014-2024, is a survey of ten years' worth of her photographic series, 219 images which she has tipped into used copies of Beaumont Newhall's History of Photography. Since 2019, Kalman has been making work based on her personal relationship with the male-dominated history of photography, appropriating photographs made by male photographers with the intent of expressing how she struggles with the influence of a male point of view in image making. When it came time for her to produce a collection of her work, it felt like the only logical step was to revise a book that was so stifling to her as a young woman. To that end, Kalman will speak about the impetus behind making a book like this as well as the struggle of working against her own long held beliefs in 'straight' photography.
