"Beyond Shattered Honor" is an art project that explores the issue of honor killings in Iran, shedding light on the complex web of gender-based violence, early marriages and deeply ingrained societal standards. These brutal killings stem from the belief that an individual's actions can bring shame to their family. This leads to women's deaths accused of dishonoring their families. Reasons behind these acts range from rejecting marriage proposals and being in frowned upon relationships to seeking divorce and facing allegations of misconduct.
At the heart of this initiative are six portraits depicting known victims of honor killings; Donya Rezaei, Fatemeh Barihi, Faezeh Maleki Nia, Leila Shakiba, Mona Heidari and Zilan Eivaz. These portraits, carefully selected from media and printed on paper pay tribute to these women whose lives were tragically cut short by their own family members. Through displaying these images with shadows, against a wall backdrop the installation bravely addresses the silence and secrecy surrounding the stories of women who have fallen victim to honor related violence.
