Jessie Mann is a painter, writer and conceptual artist, whose paintings have been featured in ProxArt (Fall, 2011), Washington City Paper, The Times Union, and The Roanoke Times. As a conceptual artist Jessie Mann has collaborated with many artists, such as Katy Grannan, Justine Kurland, and Mary Chiarmonte. Her ongoing collaboration with photographer Len Prince, “Self Possessed”, is the most direct of these collaborations dealing expressly with the phenomenology of the collaborative subject in art. Selections from the Self Possessed series are in the permanent collections of The Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty, and The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. The series traveled from New York’s Danziger Projects to The Cathy Edelman Gallery in Chicago, The Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta, and the Adams Gallery in Washington D.C. Jessie has collaborated with Liz Liguori on a series of portraits/tableaux, which were featured in Bullett Magazine along with an essay by Mann on lesbianism in Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. Additionally, Liguori and Mann have collaborated on a series mixed media works on photographic paper. These works push at the boundaries between painting and photography and raise the issue of photography’s latent abstract and painterly tendencies and conversely, painting’s light capturing action.
