Founded by photographer and curator Nathan Lyons (1930–2016), Visual Studies Workshop is one of the earliest independent, nonprofit, artist-run spaces in the country, creating a new model for an interdisciplinary education program where experimentation, collaboration, and critical analysis are key principles. Since 1969, VSW has produced hundreds of exhibitions and film and video screenings; published six hundred+ artists' books; founded and published Aaerimage: the Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism (1972–2018); amassed research collections of a million+ objects; provided residencies to 500+ artists; and educated hundreds of students throughworkshops and an MFA program with SUNY Brockport.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
