This approachable online zine-making workshop touches upon important historical and current concepts of zine-making and zine-culture and introduces participants to the power of telling our stories through zines. During this online session, we will consider the creative elements of zine-making – discussing visual flow; how images can complement or detract from one another; and experiment in layout and sequencing content in varying size, number, and spatial layouts. Utilizing the Progressive Web App 'shrimpzine', this series is aimed at both teenagers and adults with an interest in art and photography, who have access to a smartphone to use during workshop sessions, and a desire to learn the basics in beginning to create their own self-published works.

As an introduction to making zines, we will begin with a conversation about building our relationship with zines and their history, understanding a zines' potential, and discussing the visual language of zines. Workshop participants will be introduced to the Progressive Web App 'shrimpzine', considering its use as an access point to zine-making whilst being encouraged to improvise creatively and playfully. This workshop session will also focus on editing and sequencing, encouraging users to think strategically about their images and photo albums living on their mobile devices.

Whilst we work on our zines, we will encourage questioning our decisions and progress by asking:

  • What is your zine about?

  • Is this a representation of you, your identity, your interests, and/or your aspirations?

  • What are you gaining from this practice?

  • What are the challenges you face while creating a zine?

  • What will each page consist of -- images, text, collage?

  • What happens as you turn the pages, the reverse side of each page, the building of sequential narrative?

  • Consider scaling images up and down -- remixing, re-editing, disassembling and reassembling the sequences.

This workshop is limited to 8 participants, however, it is open for observation.  The first 8 peole register will be participants, unless they only want to observe the workshop.  Q&A will be open as well.
