Teaching the Constructed Image

Christine Shank

Saturday, October 11 - 2:00PM to 3:00PM
Jenkins Fine Art Center Rm 1326

This talk will be focused on a course I developed and teach at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) called the Constructed Image. This is a semester long course that focuses on contemporary practices of creating constructed and staged images while investigation the history and conceptual background of this way of creating photographs.

Over the past five years of teaching the Constructed Image, I have developed the curriculum to reflect this ongoing genre of contemporary imaging making through assignments, reading selections, in-class exercises, research projects, and lectures showing contemporary and historical artists' work that relates to the assignments and sub-genre of this type of imaging making. For this talk I will discuss the pedagogy of the course through practice and methods-both practical and conceptual-by examining specific assignments, and showing the artwork students created for these assignments.
