Brittany Nelson

Saturday, October 11 - 3:00PM to 4:00PM
Jenkins Fine Art Center Rm 1326

Brittany Nelson's work investigates the role of the resurrected chemical photography process and its relationship to shifting ideas of representation in contemporary photography. Utilizing chemistry rooted within photographic history, Nelson is interested in disrupting the traditional hierarchy by separating process from imagery, and cataloguing all possible variables in an exhaustive set of experiments. To address the function of the artist
as both critic and participant, the focus of the
work involves the destructive chemical combination referred to as Mordancage, which violently reacts to the silver content of analog papers. The result of the image creation is an intentional destruction of both the paper's traditional function, as well as its most costly component. Borrowing cues from minimalist painting, Nelson is interested in drawing parallels between the current state of photographic material exploration with ideas of self-reflexivity, to propose the role of the scientific photograph as the new landscape.
