Greenville is located in the north central coastal plain region of Eastern North Carolina, approximately 85 miles east of Raleigh, the capital city of North Carolina and 87 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean. With an easy access to North Carolina's "Research Triangle" (one hour), and in a close driving distance to Richmond, VA (3 hours), and Washington, D.C. (4.5 hours) there are plenty opportunities for cultural excursions to museums and galleries. In 2008 and 2010, Greenville was named one of the nation's "100 Best Communities for Young People" by the America's Promise Alliance. In 2012, Greenville was ranked in the top ten of the nation's "Best Small Places For Business And Careers" by Forbes Magazine. The city is also known as "BMX Pro Town USA". Greenville is the home of East Carolina University, the second-largest university and fastest-growing campus in the University of North Carolina system. The photography program at East Carolina University is a part of one of the largest Schools of Art and Design in the Southeast. Counting close to 50 full-time faculty and about 35 graduate students, with more than 500 undergraduates, School of Art and Design is the largest art program in North Carolina, with over 40 years of continuous tradition. Our students have the opportunity to take classes in fourteen different areas of concentration, including Photography, Cinema Production, Animation/Interactive Design, and Printmaking.
