Imagemaker Presentation "Place and Time: Reenactment Pageant Photographs"

Friday, November 02 - 1:30PM to 2:15PM
Aztlan Center

Throughout the series my photographs balance between depicting reality and depicting fiction. They document a present-day phenomenon- the reenactment of historical events-that demands an inherent level of the "willing suspension of disbelief" among the community that puts the events on, as well as within the audience.

The concept of delusion relates to our understanding and interpretation of history as well. The ways in which we infuse past events with our current cultural biases and references becomes quite clear in many of the reenactments I have photographed over the years. They often act as a kind of catharsis for the communities that put them on, a way for these typically small communities to process some of the basic, and sometimes uncomfortable, questions of their origins-and to feel a connection to a larger narrative. History may be the collective memory of past experience, but memory is often tricky.
