Is talking about race racist? Are we living in a post-racial society? These are questions posed by many millennials in the classroom. Teaching a diversity-centered curriculum is often considered a difficult task among educators because of the sensitivity of the subject. For many, the difficulty lies in the fear and anticipation of conflict behind the effort. What is the best way to introduce these subjects to minimize discomfort and even arguments in the classroom? We will address historical and contemporary topics within photography related to sexual identity, race, gender, religion and discuss developing appropriate language and approaches that are clear and specific, along with some best practices for developing a comfortable classroom climate.
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
