The Archive as a Photographic Tool

Kayla Suzanne Holdgreve is a photographer and visual artist from Lima, Ohio. She received a BFA in Photography from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio, and received her MFA in Photography from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. With the use of photography, family archives and text, Holdgreve explore ideas of home, autobiography and memory. She often manipulates her negatives and prints, as well as includes the use of dirt from specific familial locations. When using expired films, papers and non-archival materials, she likes to think about how preservation as well as the deteriorating image can reflect our experience with memory. She currently lives and works as a photographic archivist in the Bay Area, California.
