Critical Photojournalism: Ethics, Practice and Business, co-written by presenters Judy Walgren, faculty member at Foothill College, and Tara Pixley, assistant professor of journalism at Temple University, points a contemporary and critical lens at the practice of photojournalism. The presentation will highlight the social impacts of visual storytelling, ethical considerations around representation and implied vs direct consent. They will disentangle journalistic myths such as objectivity and explore topics that include implicit bias, visual rhetoric and news images and trauma-informed photojournalism. Joining them for this lively discussion is Raymond Thompson, Jr., assistant professor of photojournalism at the University of Texas at Austin.
