"What does this have to do with photography?" The early years of the SPE Women's Caucus
Linda Brooks is a Twins Cities-based artist, teacher, curator, and parent whose photo-based projects explore the relationship between imagery's personal content with larger cultural contexts. Brooks earned a BFA (1973) and an MFA (1976) from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her photographs have featured in solo exhibitions at the George Eastman House, Rochester, NY, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, the Cultural Center, Chicago, IL, and the Sabes Jewish Community Center, MN, among others. Brooks has also participated in more than 80 group exhibitions at sites including Pier 24, San Francisco; Aperture, NYC; Hallwalls, Buffalo, NY; and the 5th Vienna Biennale, Austria. Brooks was a Hermitage Fellow for 2018-2020 and has won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, Minnesota State Arts Board and the McKnight Foundation.
Brooks has curated many shows, including Young Voices: photographs of/by girls/teens/women, and the Jerome Hill Centennial Photography Exhibition 2005. She recently published a monograph: PROXIMITIES art, education, activism (TC Photo, 2020).
Dialogue and critique are important to the SPE mission.
