It is a timely moment to be an educator in the Middle East. How can we move beyond mass media and apprehension, into a deeper local politic and understanding of one another? We will explore pedagogy that challenges the dynamics of traditional classrooms, prioritizes open dialogue, and values the lived experience of each person in the room. Photography, video, and writing assignments where students become co-teachers will be discussed. Considering the different temporalities from which we speak, when do we press the shutter? What is at stake in our images? What is visual literacy?
